Ron Fouchier is professor in Molecular Virology at Erasmus MC Rotterdam. He heads a world-class team of scientists studying the molecular virology of respiratory viruses, in particular influenza. His team identified or characterized various “new” viruses, such as human metapneumovirus, coronavirus NL63, SARS coronavirus, MERS coronavirus, and influenza virus H16. Currently, his research is focused on respiratory virus zoonoses, transmission, pandemics and antigenic drift and viral gene-therapy. Fouchier is member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities and Academia Europeae. He is recipient of the Heine-Medin (2006) and Huibregtsen awards (2013) and is a web-of-science Highly Cited author.
